one way i know of, is, the compressor output, the pipe has threads on the vxr turbo, the normal doesnt. but checking that on a car your about to buy, is rather difficult.

The most obvious is usually the vxr models have the actuater with bold letters DZ on them, i dont think the standard turbo actuater does (but this will need confirming)

also as previously mentioned (thr threads) also the vxr has a purple metal plate pinned on it with details,(but ya have to look hard for these two, and usually the heatsheild is in the way,

See if there is a yellow sticker on the actuator with dz printed on it. if not pull the bottom boost hose off the turbo and see if it has little ridges on it to stop the boost pipe from blowing off. if it has any of these then its a vxr, if not then just a standard unit.

What does the little ridge look like under the boost hose?

Ya my original message seems to be confirmed ie DZ easily seen on the actuater, as ya say the "ridge" as ya put it, looks like threads to grip, but, that could be awkrawd for you because ya gotta take the pipe off too see it, so please go by ya gut feel n the DZ letters obvious to see,
    hope i help.
