Yeah body only is just the camera body no lens.

you can get some very good deals on kit lens (camera and lens).

what kind of budget do you have?
what do you want from the camera?

I have recently purchased a Canon 1000D which IMO is a great starter camera. The shop I bought mine from were wanting £379.99 for the camera and the basic lense, an 18-55mm lense.

I managed to get the camera, 18-55mm lense, a 75-300mm lense (will use for motorsport photography), a carry case, and a memory card all for £569.99 instead of being near the £700 mark.

Best thing you can do is go into a private shop, like a one off, and see if they will match an offer you have seen elsewhere, like Argos or Comet, and ask what other extras they can throw in for you. If you can, pay cash and make them aware you are a cash buyer and see what they can do for you.

    I have 2 dSLR's, I have the

    Sony A350
Sony A380 (this would make a very great 1st camera for any user).

I have held other dSLR's but only the sony range felt right in my hands

I've got the baby sony DSLR the a230 the bottom of the range.
the A330 has live view and tilting screen ontop of the a230's specs and the a380 has a 14.* resolution +the a330 specs so there not much difference to warrent the high cost of the a380.

IMHO get the 330 and spend the difference on len's ie the 75-300 mm telephocal lens

I'm a Nikon man, have a D80 and would recommend it to anyone. Its a couple up from the most basic, but IMO its still perfect for a beginner. It was my first SLR after coming from a bridge camera.

They seem to have gone up in price a bit, think I only payed around £350 for cam + 18-135mm lens, there now selling for £350+ body only. Around £450 with lens. Still a good price though for what your getting.

looking for a used one for now until i get used to it and know what to look for. budget is minimal with a baby on the way.

im wanting something that can focus really close for those detailed shots and maybe something that takes nice landscape pics. i start work really early and theres been so many times i wished i had a camera with me to capture the scenery. obv they'l be loads of baby pics too.

    have you looked on ebay?

for my landscape shots I use my 18-70mm lens, for close up shots (macro) I use a 100mm lens.

but to keep costs down you can get macro glasses that attach to your standard lens. its not perfect but will do until you can afford a macro lens.
