This is my first post here and i'm trying to help my parents out who have an Mk 4 astra petrol 1.6 (i think maybe 1.4) and also no clue about cars!
The car cut out about three times but started again, then the fourth time it did it is would not restart. So my mum called the RAC out who noticed there was no gasket on the EGR valve. He took this off and gave it a clean (he aparrently said it was filthy). Put it all back together and hey presto the car started.
I saw the guide on removing and replacing the EGR valve looks very simple. The vauxhall main dealer wanted £191 to fit a 90p gasket to this! They also said it had to go on their diagnostic machine..... Even though the car is running with no warning lights on.
So my question is firstly:
1.) Would a dirty EGR valve cause the car not to start and cut out at low or decelerating revs?
2.) If the car is running now how important is fitting a gasket?
3.) If the EGR valve is removed or changed does the cars diagnostics need to be reset or are vauxhall just taking the mickey?
4.) Should they replace the EGR valve? The car has done 60k miles approx and is about 6-8 years old.
Sorry for so many questions and hope my post makes sense, as i live miles away from my parents and trying to help them over the phone is difficult at best.
Any help would be much appreciated.
