EGR Valve - engine problem Mk 4 Astra

    Hi guys,

This is my first post here and i'm trying to help my parents out who have an Mk 4 astra petrol 1.6 (i think maybe 1.4) and also no clue about cars!

The car cut out about three times but started again, then the fourth time it did it is would not restart. So my mum called the RAC out who noticed there was no gasket on the EGR valve. He took this off and gave it a clean (he aparrently said it was filthy). Put it all back together and hey presto the car started.

I saw the guide on removing and replacing the EGR valve looks very simple. The vauxhall main dealer wanted £191 to fit a 90p gasket to this! They also said it had to go on their diagnostic machine..... Even though the car is running with no warning lights on.

    So my question is firstly:

1.) Would a dirty EGR valve cause the car not to start and cut out at low or decelerating revs?

2.) If the car is running now how important is fitting a gasket?

3.) If the EGR valve is removed or changed does the cars diagnostics need to be reset or are vauxhall just taking the mickey?

4.) Should they replace the EGR valve? The car has done 60k miles approx and is about 6-8 years old.

Sorry for so many questions and hope my post makes sense, as i live miles away from my parents and trying to help them over the phone is difficult at best.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Ted

I had a mk4 1.6 that kept cutting out when slowing down it would stall and start again after a couple of mins.

Cleaned the EGR valve I did keep the gasket on still had the same problem.
Cleaned the throttle body problem still there.
Took it to a vk breakers who put it on a diagnostics machine bearing in mind the Engine management light kept coming on the it was'nt reporting any errors
They thought it waqs the throttle body so I bought a second hand one, I think it was £25 didnt fix the prob took it back and I have to give a shout out to MEGAVAUX in Notts they swapped the throttle body for a EGR valve at no extra cost. This seemed to fix the stalling problem.
    Oh and welcome to AOC

So you reckon better to repalce the valve (approx 60-81 quid). I suggested they run it for a bit as it is, but they are stubborn and will prob want to take it to a garage.

So will it not matter if no gasket as only gas through valve anway?

Do you know what life of EGR valve is? do they often fail?

They have always had vauxhalls and they always have similar problems i.e random cutting out and the garage never knows why?

many thanks for your swift response

sorry for posting in wrong place .)

I'd personally get a new gasket and get egr valve from a breakers, 4 bolts it's off change it over you'll be able to do that for less than £30. Or you could try cleaning the egr valve with carb cleaner first see if that helps. Go for the cheapest first
