    A few fault codes..

Since having my head, pump and belt work done. I came to start the car this morning and it was just turning over but wouldn't fire.
there was a couple of small pops.
it fired up on the second turn of the key.

I did the paper clip test and found a few codes.
the fault light isn't on whilst driving.

    0120 THROTTLE POTENTIOMETER
    0340 CAMSHAFT SENSOR
    0110 INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR
    0100 MASS AIRFLOW
    1515

When I had the work done they changed the camshaft sensor because there was damage to the wire.
they listed it as crank sensor but it was the camshaft sensor they changed.

any ideas why I've got these faults when I never had them before.

likelihood is that they fired up the engine when all the above were removed to check the headwork was ok. clear the codes and then see if they come back before buying any new parts mate. when my friendly mechanic changed my cambelt i had the mass air flow meter off the car and it brought up the code for it. i think 10 clean starts of the engine clears the codes. could be wrong though

I'm going to disconnect the battery later and clear the codes.
it's getting worse though. first thing in the morning it just turns over and popping, and now when I turn the engine off and come to start it again, it fires up on second go.

If it was a faulty cam sensor, they replaced it but I don't think it's a Vauxhall one.
    they charged me £48.

would that have an effect on idling/driving as well as just general starting?

with cam sensor and crank sensors normally the car will run fine until it warms up then it will die. but when theyre absolutely nackered it will mess up idling aswell.

Having no luck with it still.
I tried taking the battery off for 30 mins, and the turning ignition on and off 30 times, but the codes are not resetting.

I know they're not resetting cuz yesterday I took the plug off the coolant sensor cuz it was loosish the way it fits.
so that error has shown up as a recent fault.

because I don't get the engine light on at all whilst driving, it makes me think there is no sensor fault that's causing it not to start.

it just constantly turns but won't fire, with a few pops from the exhaust.
I'm going to check the plugs and all connections tomorrow. if I can't find the obvious then I'm taking it back to garage.

one thing I noticed was the cambelt cover was quite loose, I could turn the one bolt with my fingers. I know the cam sensor is in there somehere, so I'm wondering if that's loose.

could be one to check. might be causing vibrations on the crank and cam sensors

As above, check everything is tight first. I could be way wide of the mark here, but could it possibly be a fuel issue? Perhaps one of the pipes (fuel rail?) in the engine was damaged whent he head was off?

Also, you dont mention how the car drives (once it starts!)

I am going to check everything later today.
the car drives ok once it's started. it's nice and smooth.

it can rev itself up and down a bit when at a stop, and the revs can stick slightly high. but I think that's probably because the cable is sticking slightly as if I lift the pedal up from inside the car the revs drop to normal.

    Update on this.
The car started straight away first thing today.

I've done everything I can, and thought it was all sorted. it was starting ok whilst driving around. till it done it again.

if the swarf was from inside the head would it damage the spark plugs (short them out)?

I took the spark plugs out and 2 had swarf metal in the electrodes. I don't know if they've come from inside the head or outside.
(the pic doesn't really show it much, but it looked quite bad)

The plug that goes to the coilpack one wire was bit frayed, and someone had spliced a wire into the green wire, but not connected to anything.
is this an earth mod or something?

I took the crank sensor out and it was covered in metal filings.

personally it looks like a load of filings from when the head was done. could be wrong but thats the only thing i can think of.....
