My car is an ASTRA VXR year 2008.
Well, my stock alternator failed more than a month ago.
Battery light on.
GM has no stock on alternators so had to wait a month for the new alternator, dealer changed it last friday, car was running fine until today.
Was driving peacefully when suddenly AC stopped working, then ESP and ABS lights went on, then GID screen turned off and steering turned heavy as hell, begun to die slowly until even tacho stopped working.
Battery red light NEVER turned on.
So the brand new alternator lasted only 5 days !!
Battery wasnt changed because dealer said it was ok.
Had to wait for five hours until the towing truck came to pick my car in the middle of nowehere...
Tomorrow morning will take the car to the dealer again.
My biggest concern is why happened this to the new alternator ?
Settings menu showed 9 volts, 10 volts, 11 volts but never raised over 11 volts while my car was getting crazy, but it was showing 14 volts a couple days ago when was my last check.
Could it be a worst problem ? Something strange that make any alternator to fail ? If they fit a new one..would have same problem ?
Battery could be a reason ?
Excess of heat under bonnet ?
ECU problem ?
I wonder why battery red light NEVER turned on.
Car is still under warranty.
UPDATE (Next day)
Today the alternator was unmounted, tech chief tolds me they found a melted terminal coming from the alternator, unfortunately it melted the alternator side as well so alt is dead but GM don`t have stock again, they just brought one piece for me that was blown.
Since my car passed away on a highway far from my current dealer, so had to take my car to the nearest one that is not same where the previous alternator was mounted, they called to the dealer where the previous alt was mounted to learn more about the case, it was told when previous alternator failed they also found same terminal melted, so it seems something is making to terminal and wire getting so hot that finally melted the rubber and alternator internals.
Loosen screw on the alt terminal ? short somewhere ? still the dodgy earth may be a cause ?
Thanks again.. !
