    Coupe Turbo buying tips...

I'm currently looking to buy an Astra turbo of some kind. I've found two that I'm interested in but they're quite a long way to drive to and I don't want to make two long, unnecessary trips if I can avoid it.

Can anybody give me tips on what to look out for... I've asked lots of questions but both sellers seem to like giving one-word answers so I'd rather just go armed with lots of knowledge.

Both cars are c.2001 and have a minimum of 70k on the clock.

I've found the odd guide here and there so please don't slate me if this has been asked a million times Any help will be highly appreciated.

I made sure it had full service history
Check the turbo and how old it is and has it been changed
Check when the water pump and belt was done
Make sure no warning lights on

Are turbos expensive to recondition\repair should it go wrong?

What age or mileage should the belts be replaced?

I would make sure you have enough set aside, say £700. This will cover a replacement turbo, timing belt change or some other unforeseen problem.

If the are giving you one word answers walk away. If they can't be arsed to answer your questions and help you out... let them rot!

    Look for common problems:

Cam cover gasket - remove spark plug cover and check for oil as well.
Turbo, check for obvious leaks - get your hands under the car and check the oil retun pipe.
Exhaust can leak, but isn't too expensive to fix.
CV joints / dirveshafts - make sure there isn't any oil on them.
