    Water pump gone, what damage?

I was driving along and noticed steam/smoke coming out the back. I pulled in straight away and killed the engine.
opened the bonnet and the water was down and it was pouring onto the floor from the pump area.

garage was just over the hill so came and towed it.
said they'd change the pump for £150 and let me know if it needs a new belt.
I left it with them and later they called be up saying that the timing had slipped. the belt was slack he said and it was out about 3 teeth he said.

they're gonna change the pump and belt and see if it misfires when they start it up.
if it's the head that needs work as well it's gonna be about £500 all together.

Do you think that valve damage has been done?

if it only slipped slightly then you may be lucky enough to have avoided head damage. if they are doing the waterpump, then you definately want a new belt and also new idler/tensioner wheels as well, whilst they are in that area. it would be false economy not to, should be good for another 40k then

Hi Steve. he asked if it banged, it didn't I just pulled straight over and turned ignition off.
he says it might have done the damage when the engine stopped.

I just hope it's not too serious.

    thanks.

If it was still running without any extra noises/bangs then you might have got away without damage.... the only way you will tell is if you pull the head off or get a Fibre optic camera down in manifolds to look at the back of the valves to make sure theyre seating properly.

Needs 2 new valves they said.
they put a new pump on, started it up and it popped.
she said it's such a lovely car, be a shame not to have it done.

    so it needs:
    pump
    cambelt kit
    head gasket
    2 valves
    antifreeze
    5 hrs labour
    VAT

    £500 ish

thats quite a good price. garage labour is normally 40-50 quid an hour (250 quid) so 250 for parts isnt bad at all.

I could get the parts a bit cheaper myself, but they don't guarantee the work if you supply own stuff.
    labour is £45 hr.

Update on this. I spoke to them yesterday and they said it's more than they thought.
he wants to change all the valves. he wants the job done properly he said.
he wants the car running perfect and wants to be on the safe side, so there's no comeback.

the best part is, when I said to him over the phone about more work needing doing, meaning more money. he said he'll still stick to the £500 ish quote.

He said the head is all stripped ready, just waiting for the valves and head set.
how many valves is he going to change? they're coming from vauxhall, and the garage quoted me £25 for the 2 they said they were doing before.

head rebuld kit is about 100 quid. maybe more maybe less depending on what engine you have. same as the other prices iv provided. depends on engine but they shouldnt be much more than the prices iv shown - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-X18XE...item2a04515404
    cambelt kit about 60 quid - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-ASTRA...item2c50554009

antifreeze is only about 10 quid from vauxhall

    water pump about 30 quid - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WATER-PUMP-Vau...item1c0f74fdc2
