    1.7 CDTI 05 poss overheating

    HI,

I've recently had two water hoses go on me in regards there has been a split, the milage of the car is 137000 so I have to expect these things but after checking noticed that the main hose from the top of the radiator to the thermostat often gets highly pressurised to the point there is viurtually no way of depressing the pipe whilst hot, furthermore, I've left the engine ticking over for over 10mins and the radiator fan still hasn't kicked in and have been too scared to continue to rn the engine for fear of overheating. Does anyone know the perameters of when the fan should kick in-obviously the mk5 doesn't have a temperature gauge so it is difficult to know what the car has reached in temp. Any help welcome.

    1st of all welcome.

The Mk5 has a indicator on the dash to tell you when the engine is too hot.

Also you dont say what trim level you have, as some of the higher spec models can have the temp displayed on the MFD.

I have my water temp showing all the time on my scangauge which is not part of the astra but can be bought from ebay.

    Many thanks Munkie,

I think it is more a case of paranoia at the moment as in the past I've had two head gaskets go on cars and just don't want the same to happen to this one. I am aware there is an indicator-although this never even lights up on inital ignition so therefore am not 100% confident on that but it is the club version so doesn't have any MFD. I will check out this scangauge.
    Many thanks
    Brett
