Question astra mk4 engine managment light :(

    i have bought my girlfriend a 1999 astra G
bought it cheap off a mate because it failed MOT on a few things (ball joints, seatbelt fixture and emissions etc)
i thought the emissions where too high because of the K&N air filter but it needed a new cat, i welded a new one in myself and it sailed through, i also fitted a new lambda sensor (did that before the new cat)
but, the bloody engine managment light still comes on, however... its not on all the time,
when you start it up its fine, then after a while it might come on, then it just randomly comes on and off now and then.
also the car has a slight misfire when comeing off the revs and it misfires very slightly when at a steady rev but only in neutral, the car does have a big exhaust on but i have checked the system and there is no blowing.
the exhaust fumes do smell quite strong of fuel but it sailed through an emissions test

does anybody know what could be causing this to happen? also the car doesnt do many mpg either.
the car still pulls well for a 1.6 8v
there must be something making the light come on but i dont know where to start!

    any help is much appreciated

    Cheers,
    Rob.

Pedal test won;t work on the car above, you'd have to do the paperclip test to see what the stored codes may be

try a temp sensor for the fuel injection, it might not be giving the ecu the correct reading so when cold its ok but when warm its still thinking its cold and "running rich" this would cause your smell and also might explain what killed the cat that you had to replace!
    Just a thought!!
