1.4 sxi 55 plate engine has no power.

Can anyone help,or point me in the right direction.
Catalytic convetor light came on, slight loss of power then went away.
yesterday light stayed on, loss of engine power devastating, crawled home in 3rd gear.
Today dragged its sorry ass to local garage, where i was told the 4th valve had no power at al. He changed the spark plugs ,went a lil better but not much, think he said he mapped it and was very poor, could be piston head or valve?until he strips the engine down won't know what's wrong with it. At the same time window wipers blew a fuse replaced them and they blew again. When car almost died on the way to garage went to brake to a stop brake pedal was rock solid, applied handbrake ,few mins later it was ok,exhaust ,gurgling ,burbling along, juddering forward. Am i just unlucky or is it lights out for my car.
any suggestions would be much appreciated.

my guess is the camshaft (either one or both) have snapped!

common on the Twinports (1.0/1.2/1.4) as fitted on Agila, Corsa, Meriva and Astra

It may (and hopefully for you) just be something else but before checking out other options do the pedal test first to get a fault code and then lift off the engine cover (remove coil pack first) then the bolts holding cover on then look for obvious breaks

    pedal test here: http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...78&postcount=2

*youll either get a sequence of flashes as detailed in the guide, or a ECN code showing up on odometer display*

good luck! hopefully its just a simple fix like the commonly faulted EGR valve but do the above test and whip off the cover - do it yourself or get sum1 with tools to do it!! Dont pay for a mechanic to do it!
