They usually scratch the discs if they are moved or knocked while the disc is spinning, although I'm sure I read that any of the newer xboxes had had this problem rectified

I've had this a few times. It's pain in the butt.

Get a really soft cloth and wipe it. Start on the inside and wipe round and round in circles toward the outside. Do this a few times and theres a decent chance it will come back to life. Try being soft at first. If it still doesnt read do the wiping again but be firm with it.

    Works for me.

Never clean DVD's Cd's any type of discs in a circular motion!

Always work from the inside to the out in straight lines, you can use some glasses cleaner on thhe disc as well. If its a deep scratch you will need a pro to re-polish it for you
