Coupe 2.2 turns over but wont fire!! Vx says 1000?!?! help!

    Hi guys!

major problem! so my car has been fine since i've had it, but yesterday morning, i tried starting it, and it wont start!!

the engine turns over, but it wont fire!!! i called RAC out and he checked fuel pump, and (luckily) i had a spare coil pack in my boot (long story) and that still didnt work!

he plugged in his laptop, and the only warning was the immobiliser... so i got my spare key and it still didnt start.

so... i got it towed to a Vx garage, and they said they couldnt find a problem except that it wont compress and they had to strip the head!!! so after negotiating on the price, they went ahead. after a while I called back, and now they said that it needs a new cylinder head!!! at £1000!!!!!!!!!

PLS PLS PLS, i call on all astra owners for help!!! can anyway help me out or at least point me in the right direction as i really dont wanna spend a grand!!!

    THANKS!!!

If the diagnostic came out with 'immobiliser'... the managemnt light should have been flasing on turn over?

i would try and get hold of a second hand engine if the coupe is not worth much. and get it fitted by a specialist rather than the dealer.

2.2 engines are like rocking horse sh*t to get at a reasonable price, alot of them seem to need heads or put a conrod through the block to do with an oil fault or something, not really sure but its going to sting you in the pocket!

when i tried to start it, all the lights were on (if i remember correctly). The thing is, we heard a slight knocking noise, which sounded as if something inside the engine was turning round and round but loose and therefore hitting something else...

we thought it might have been the timing chain...

but yea, does the cylinder head sound like the problem? and is it really £1000?!?!

having said that, its ALOT cheaper than buying a new car...

    arghhhh...not good!

u can get fully rebuilt 2.2 heads for just over £400

immob fault codes can often be kicked up by a faulty fuel pump relay so u may wanna look at these - they are the 2 purple ones in the engine bay relay box

    £10 each

just got off the phone with Vx, and they said the chain skipped and the valves were bent...

the price they quoted was £1800. This includes,

    Head work - £500
2 New Chains - £250 (Timing and bounce(?))
Consumables - £200 (Oil and gaskets)

    then £800 for labour...

    does that sound reasonable?!

i know it'll be cheaper if i took it somewhere else, but would i be saving that much more?

    thanks for your patience guys!
