Astra Z18XE - Juddering when cold - fault code P0170

    Hi all

As in the title my 1.8 Astra struggles to get going - losing power and juddering alot - for about the first 5mins when started from cold.

I cleaned out the throttle body a couple of months ago (which sorted another problem i had), and i'm not getting any dash lights coming on.

With pedal test i'm getting fault code P0170 (Fuel Trim Malfunction) which a lot of people are saying often relates to Air flow meter.

However, with the problem being predominately when the engine is cold, i'm thinking possible coilpack?

Anyone else had similar problems or got any ideas what to start with?

    Cheers Steve

I realy dont know TBH without looking

Can you smell a lot of fuel on startup?

    New spark plugs might help?

    Sounds like fuel/air problem

Whats the tick over like on start up?

it should be quite high, then come right down pretty soon, if its spluttering then fuel isnt burning, ie running rich or not igniting

Got two z18xe's never known to do that even with a faulty AFM (that isn't to say it could't be)

Yeh try the spark plugs first, if you susspect the coilpack i have a good spare that works

I have the same fault code on my astra, but mine judders when the tank gets 3/4 empty, for me it is deffo a fuel/air problem, on cold startups it has a very high tick over and then the revs drop down very quickly and it sometimes stalls. Is this caused by the air flow meter??

I've had this code on the pedal test since i bought it in Sept 2008.

I've cleaned the TB off the car twice in that time
changed the fuel filter (not to sort this, but just because it needed changing)
changed the AFM for a brand spanker

Hasn't got rid of the code though

To be fair, my car doesn't judder or struggle either. It did do upon 1st morning startup & again when i left work after it'd been sat for 10hours .......... but the TB cleaning sorted that

check the pre-cat O2 sensor, it could well be that the heated circuit within the sensor has failed, hence the problems when the sensor is cold but it improves as the engine and sensor warm up
