End of the day, its like any car. Look after it properly, and it should be ok. Thrash and abuse it, then it may well go wrong.

Ford Focus ST uses Volvos 2.5 5 Cylinder Turbo, which has been used in big Volvo's for years, and is a fairly bullet proof engine as a block. However have heard a few people have problems with some of the Ford ancilaries.

Does the focus ST have a volvo T5 gearbox? i wouldn't have thought so
The gearbox in my s60 20T was perfect, much nicer to shift than an f23.

The issue with the GM turbo set up is it's very small and runs high oil pressure, so not only does it get a bit near it's limits when asked to shove 18PSi day in day out on mapped cars, plus the oil seals are fairly weak but both these issues stem from way back in the days of the Calibra/Cavalier turbos.

Ford turbo's are far bigger/stronger units hence you can take a Cossie of RS to higher power and the turbo remain within their happy place. The Volvo units used in later cars as said, are pretty well proven lumps and to date, never heard of a turbo giving up untill well over 100k. Guess they're just engineered that wee bit better but it wouldn't put me off buying a turbo powered Vauxhall.
