    Gear or clutch problem...help

Not sure if im in the right bit... only joined today. My Y '01 Astra is getting stuck in reverse and now it seems i have no 1st gear at all. It clunks through the changes and is making a whinning noise when driving. i have only had it for 4 months from a trade seller and they only gave me 1 month warranty or 1000 miles (which of course are up) Any suggestions would be welcome.

I dont know if it is. I know I had a similir problem with my old Corsa, it struggled to find gears. Reverse became first, first became 3rd. It was the linkage that had come off. It was about £75-£80 for my Corsa I think. But you have a whinning noise too thats why I'm not sure. Someone on here will be able to help more.

I dont want to upset you mate, but by the sounds of it... literally your gearbox might have had it, whining gearbox aint good. Check to see if there is any oil in the gearbox, and top up if nessacery, if that doesnt cure it, or the linkage replacement doesnt cure it, it might be new gearbox time
Probably the ONLY Astra Mk3 sitting on Corsa D SXI rims!
And Now a Diesel on Discs all round!

hmm, differientials in the gearbox sha**ed ?, sounds very simular to what happened to me one bad afternoon,

Mine felt at the time as your describing, gear 1 was completely gone, when ever tried to set off it felt like the left wheel was about to pop off & was hearing whining noises all the way to the closest garage, which then turned out to be the above. Thought the car had done 160k miles.

manged to source a gearbox for £60 and bought a new clutch + slaver for 140 and then had it fit for £100 from a garage.
