    clampers!!!!!!!!!!!

absolutely ragin, bought my car on sat with no tax, not got my docs through to tax it yet and been clamped outside my house for no tax.need to pay £260 within 24 hours to have the clamp removed or it goes up to £360 and they tow my car away. totally lost it with the woman on the phone saying i have no way of taxing it and her answer was "you should have kept it on private ground until the docs arrived"

in the last month and a half me and my girlfriend have both had our cars written off by other drivers, i crashed my work van in the snow (prob my fault to be fair) and now this, wonder why i bother sometimes

the women on the phone was correct, without road tax it has no place on the road and should be on a drive or in a garage, so no sympathys on that one mate, you knew the law,

i do feel for you and your mrs writing of your cars, its just a bad patch mate, chin up

was it the police that clamped you or a private company?
if its the latter then unless they have authority and signs to clamp on the street they have committed an offence.

Did u buy the car from a dealership / garage or was it a private seller? If it was from a dealer then they shouldnt have let you drive off the forecourt without adequate cover/tax.

When you bought the car you should have got part of the log book which you can take to the post office and tax it with that

Ah, the joys of living in Scotland where private clampers are illegal. Got my old 306 clamped in a supermarket carpark once. Silly beggars used a padlock on the clamp. Borrowed a set of 42" bolt croppers, job's a good un.

It'll be clamped the DVLA who are authorised to do it in law.

Cutting the clamp off is clearly criminal damage for which you'll be arrested.

You can tax your vehicle online provided its insured. As mentioned if you have the stub from the v5 and a cover note from the insurance you can tax the vehicle at a post office. Obviously you will not have this yet so it doesn't help.

Basically you've committed the offence although obviously there is some mitigating circumstances. I am not sure if you can appeal it but for now you will need to pay the fees regardless or you'll car will get seized.
