    CAT's - Do I need one?

    Hey all.

Basically, I know with petrol cars, a cat is law after 1993, but I was wondering, if the same law applies to Diesel?

I have a 1999 2.0 Di Estate and I'm on the quest for more power, and the thought keeps coming to mind...

Do I need a cat? If I don't I'm thinking of replacing it, with just a decat pipe, and replace the backbox to a free-flowing one.. (unsure what make yet)

If I can get rid of the cat, then I'll be happy, if not, are there any "sports" ones that you can get for diesels?

    Tah all.

You can't get rid of it all together, it'll fail an MOT for sure. There's loads of sports cats out there so I'm sure there'd be one for a diesel.

contact lmfvauxhall they may be able to help. A Decat or sports cat would be a good help on a Dti but wont do a lot for a Di

    How would it fail MOT?

I might make my own Decat pipe, how come it would make much differ on a di? It's a turbo diesel same as the dti, only differ is one has more power than the other.

I am fitting a intercooler etc too.

I'd imagine it would fail on emissions.

it would fail on emmisons like chris said.

BUT there are a few garages around who will let the odd one "pass" but we ermm they tend to charge a little more

apart from the intercooler the DTI has a high pressure turbo the DI a low pressure. Probably a better bet to look at trading the car for a faster one if thats what you are after. You will spend a load on a DI to make it warm.

It would not fail because there was no cat there, it would probably fail on the emmisions test.

If you really want to do it then theres ways around it

A straight though pipe is what I'm aiming for.
I have a garage that will let it slip well they did for my mini, involved standing 4ft away from the exhaust with the probe haha.

I am planning to fit a intercooler, stright through pipe, k&n filter.

I was thinking about fitting a dti fuel pump, turbo, ecu too, but not sure I'd my engine can cope? Any one here know the answer to that?
