    Oil usage between changes ?

I thought the oil level between oil changes should dip, even if just a tad?

The g/f's Polo was last serviced approx June/July 2008. She never got it booked in last year & as a result i'll be doing it myself when i have access to the pit at work.

Checking her oil level on the dipstick & it's black as anything but it hasn't moved since the day we got it back from the service in 2008 - it's still at the max level.

Is this normal? I've never had one that uses NO oil before.

Mine never used to use oil between services until recently, and even now it only drops ~3/4 litre every 20k, and that's on a Z16XE with 154,000 miles on it

no drop in oil is the best scenario you can have and a black colouration indicates it is doing its job and requires changing so good news

Ah. She doesn't do a lot of miles. Perhaps only 6k per year.

The bulk of her driving will be approx 5 / 5.5 mile journeys with approx 50/50 split of 50mph zones & 30mph town built up area.

If this makes a difference. I suppose it does in a way as that she should've had an oil change long ago, but for oil usage, would this make much difference or is it only when you cane the miles you would expect a change?

Low miles will obviously affect the amount of oil lost between topups, as it shouldn't be losing oil at standstill
