    relays

Does my 2006 petrol engined astra have a relay on the starter motor? It's just the basic 1400 astra life model and I'm having a spot of trouble with starting now and then. On boxing morning I went to start the car, it turned over a few times. I let go of the key, turned it again and all I got was a clicking sound. This happened a few times so I called out the breakdown service. When they turned up half an hour later, I proceeded to demonstrate the problem and low and behold, the car started straight away. I and the mechanic seemed to believe that it may have been a relay problem if there is one. Can anyone shed any light on this before I start pulling things about? Thanks in anticipation.

    Welcome mate

Yes your car will have a starter relay but the fact your hearing a clicking inside makes me think it's working and your problem is with the starter motors solonide

Hello and thanks for the reply. In fact, I was a bit concerned that it was the solenoid myself but discounted it because this problem first happened just before the warranty ran out and I took it to the local vauxhall dealer who put the car through their diagnostic procedure and deduced that it was the starter that was at fault, so they fitted a new one under warranty of course. Now the problem has returned. The car starts ok as long as I don't make two attempts ie let go of the key to try again.
The second time it happened (last week) I opened up the fuse box under the bonnet and found one of the relays wasn't pushed in enough. I pushed it in and hey presto, the car started. I went to the vauxhall dealer who told me my car doesn't have a starter relay. I don't believe them since the workshop manual shows one in the diagram. Anyway sorry for being so long winded but thanks again for the reply, it's been a great help.
