I am a newbie looking for some information for my nephews car.
He has just got a 2001 Mk4 Astra SXi 1.8 5 door.
The gearknob gator (is that the correct name for the cloth/leather piece at the bottom of the gearknob ?) is quite tatty and torn in a couple of places and he got a replacement for it with a matching one for the handbrake.
We had a look at it the other day and apart from getting the plastic cap off the gearknob (with the pic of the gears 1-5 and reverse on it), there wasnt much else I could see to do that wouldnt mean quite a dismantling job.
The gearknob doesnt seem to just twist off, and from what I have read here, it seems you have to cut off the gearknob just to get it off, and I dont see any other way of getting the gater on, even if I could get that part of the console off (how do I get the part of the console off that surrounds the gearknob, where the gater is actually attached to, at the bottom, with it being attached to the underneath of the gearknob at the top). Is this making sense ?
It seems to have the standard gearknob with the entire "ring" mechanism to lift to get it into reverse.
I also couldnt see any way of getting into the handbrake gator other than taking that whole centre piece off, that surounds the handbrake. Is this the case, or it there some panel or something that I have not noticed ?
Any help or advice would be most appreciated as I dont really want to take the whole centre out of the interior if I dont have to, especially when I am not good with delicate pieces either.
Many thanks, George.
