    Turbo Queries

Hi all ive been searching and cant find a definate answer so posting it up. Im looking to go for a remap soon and reading about it says bolt on vxr turbo but i see alot of these are failing. My zlet turbo at the mo is fine holding boost ok and no smoke as far as im aware. Could i get this uprated if sent to TT or TD to same or higher spec then the vxr without spending silly money ? Im only aiming for 300bhp and then stopping lol

i have never seen a zlet at 30psi as its just over 2bar!!!!

you wont be pushing that much boost i would hope.

but yes you can get your standard zlet turbo uprated to be better than a standard vxr turbo

if you are going to do that tho, for the sake of a 10min job, i would check the manifold around the wastgate for cracks as it will need a new/good condition replacement if cracked.
you will need to unclamp the precat to check this tho.

    hope this helps

When people talk about uprating the std turbo they are usually refering to the thrust bearing which will improve the turbos strength. However it wont improve the performance of the turbo (if anything it will make it slightly worse) for that you would need to go hybrid. That will probably cost more than buying a vxr unit which is what most people do. Also the manifold casting on the vxr is better and less likely to crack.

Ok so whats the 'safe' option to push a vxr turbo too ? I think theirs a slight crack on the manifold as it is so probably be a good idea just to go the vxr route lol

You will be able to get 300 bhp from a vxr but you really need to be doing a lot of mods to help engine breathing. Not relying on high boost pressure from the turbo to get you there. Using high boost will shorten turbo life.

Well 280-300 is what im ideally looking for im not looking to put it under alot of strain as its a daily drive just something abit more pokey than it is now. Is it worth then getting the seals done on the vxr unit ?

To be honest 300bhp is close to the limit of what the vxr turbo is capable of so you would be putting it under a lot of strain. I think you should go for something a lot more reasonable like 250bhp and then decide if you want to go further and accept the shorter life span of the turbo. If you go for a new vxr turbo I think its about £100 for the 360 thrust bearing not sure the seals are worth it just fit an oil restrictor bolt.
