egr valve, try giving that a clean.

when was it last serviced? could be due some new plugs and filters too.

If this engine has an EGR valve then this type of behaviour is pretty classic for a faulty EGR. Can be cleaned, but easy enough to replace too, around £65 for a decent one off eBay for my Z16XE (1.6 16v) so likely similar if yours has one.

    Aye Z14XE's have EGR valves

I'd try cleaning the throttle body too

i think i know wot u mean mate, do u floor it in first and it almost doesnt do anything then wen it gets to about 2500rpm just goes, my z16xe does that, i rang regal askin about remaps and they said ths is to do with the fly by wire throttle body, if u remap it it will smooth out
