    grey imports..?

i have been talking to a garage owned by a bloke i know and i asked him to find me a car. now, he said he found me one, a 2.2 2001 2 door in red with 60000 on the clock, FSH etc etc..

He has now told me that he just found out its a grey import. what does this mean? i know it means that it has been imported from another country, northern ireland i would have thought, but is there any drawbacks? plus if it was imported, would it be imported as an opel or a vauxhall?

    Cheers guys

    Rhys

a grey import is a car thats basically imported with a non uk spec, so you may find that some additional work would be required to get it through a MOT etc

yeah i read that link, but i was just wondering whether anyone on here has had any experience with them. i mean it was registered in 2001, so all MOT work must have been done? i just rang DVLA with a vehicle check and they said its not an import, but it was used before it was registered...

If it come up ok for your insurance company I would not worry about it.

Grey imorts are on only a problem if you are buying a almost new car, as in when it comes to warranty claims. but on a car that is 8 years old it does not mater one little bit.

If it was originally from N.I. it would be the standard vauxhall spec.
If it was originally from R.o.I. it might actually be higher spec than the equivalent UK model. For example, the Irish Sport model was supposed to be equivalent to the SXi, but was closer to the SRi at the time.

I had an imported jap car as my last car but that was done through a UK dealer so was converted to uk spec and when getting the insurance for it all the details showed correctly on uk databases. I believe that grey imports are done by individuals or 3rd party companies. There isn't much difference in what happens but as I experienced, getting insurance and official details on it was alot easier. Dunno if that helps!
