Remove the glovebox from the dash..
Using a small screwdriver, or similar, push out the hinge pins (highlighted).

I'll take a guess one of the rails that turn the bulb off has snapped in half? I wanted to replace my lid for ages , thanks SQ MAN

now that you have your answer, can i recycle this thread?

the shelf in the pic (2), is that meant to stay put? because mine doesnt, it just sits on two grooves at the side of the glovebox...

The right hand rail does this. You can buy them seperately.

It fits into the grooves, but should have two arrow shaped catches at the back edge that clip into the rear of the glove box.

it does clip in at the back but when its like that it sits funny.. i think something must be kind of warped somewhere then, as i thought it was that simple

Just to re-resurect this thread, my glovebox lid bangs open whenever I go over a bump, pot hole or sneeze. Instead of doing my usual go ballistic and smash it into pieces I've whipped it out of the car and want to see if I can do something so the two catches protude a bit more.

However, how does the leatherette front come off the plastic lid? Any safe way to do it so I can put it back on?

    thank you

could this be a reason for a battery to go flat? or should the light go off when you take the keys out?

It could do, depends on the age of your car.
The later ones had a timed power feed for all the internal lights thatg would turn off after half an hour i think.
If it's an earlier one, the light will stay on & could flatten a battery if left on for long enough.
