    Question Too much oil? (X16SZR)

    Hi,

Changed the Oil & Oil Filter on my 1999 1.6 8v Astra for the first time and I filled it with 3 Litres of 10w40 Oil.

However on checking the dipstick, it is above the max level by quite a bit, so what went wrong?

    I thought the X16SZR requires 3.25 or 3.5 litres?

Is there any problem with having too much oil in the engine?

the X16SZR holds 3.5 ltrs when doing an oil and filter change, either the dipstick is being read incorrect or you have not drained all the old oil out. too much oil can cause excess pressure on gaskets and seals, so needs draining down to correct level

Today, I measured the amount of oil which drained out from the car and it's about 2.5litres.

Here is exactly what I did, which might be a useful reference for anyone else doing an oil change.

I used GM oil and filter from Vauxhall.

[CODE]1. Jacked up car and put on axle stands.
    2. Turned on engine for a few minutes to warm engine up then turned off.
    3. Opened Oil Filler cap.
    4. Opened Sump plug.
    5. Left oil to drain for ~1hr.
    6. Removed old Oil Filter.
    7. Cleaned up Oil dribbles.
    8. Replaced sump plug with new O-ring.
    9. Screwed on new oil filter after applying some new oil to the seal.
    10. Removed all jacks & axle stands so car is level.
    11. Filled up 3litres of fuel, 1 litre at a time.
    12. Went for a drive.
    13. Later when engine cooled completely, checked the dipstick and the oil level

this is what went wrong mate, you say you jacked up car to drain the old oil then lowered to level ground to fill it up with new oil. it should be on level ground when draining, or you will have the sump/engine at an angle and this will retain some of the oil
