    Tinnitus

I know we have a few people with it on here. Mine has got a lot worse about a month ago and I would say is now around 60-70% worse then when I first noticed it around 8 years ago. Its mainly my right ear thats worse and the right has always been the worse, although the left sounds worse as well.

Nothing has changed at all, I have had a slight cold for a little while but its not that I was hoping it would go away but its not. Spoke to my doctor and got the usual crap about seeing me in 3 weeks time as I want an appointment thats not in the middle of the day and an early evening

Has anyone elses got worse over time? Any known reasons for the increase that are treatable or is it just yet more wear and tear?

    Cheers

Mine's also been getting worse lately. It wasn't that bad until I went to Afghanistan, then it got a lot worse as I was moving around on helicopters a lot, amongst other things.

Recently though it has gone up a bit, only thing I've had is an operation on my knee.

A friend recently bought herself an ear candling set off the interweb. She did not have Tinitus but it claims to help that as well.

Ear candling is one of those alternative meds that people are always arguing about. But it worked for her, she was having problems with her glands and hearing.

I've had tinitus for as long as I remember but I have been told it is a side affect of having my tonsuls out when I was younger.
Mine hasn't got worse in the years I've had it, but I have learned to "control" it... i.e. find the sound even in a crowded room, this has also enabled me to be able to almost cancel it out. it doesn't work all the time but it does signifcantly reduce the noise...at times...
I could only compare the way I taught myself to do it as the way you can tell yourself the clock isn't going tick tock... it's going tick tick.

    -any know reasons-
it can start due to any ear trauma, or operation such as mine, tunsuls, nose, eyes, ears. but you probably know that
however depending on what has initially caused your affliction can affect the causes of increased symptoms.
in my case I believe my tinitus 'shouldn't' get any worse due to it being caused by an operation (something to do with nerve damage IIRC)
If yours started due to loud music or gun fire or any ear trauma the particular hairs in your ears cause your "swan song" the neighbouring area around that particular tone/hair can have the tendancy to die depending if the ear is still under the affects of the trauma...i.e prolonged exposure to gun fire or loud music after the inital exposure.

will more post again later my tea has just arrived =D

Stress is supposed to be a major contributing factor. My Dad suffers and he often finds his is worse if he has a lot on his plate. Also exposure to loud noise doesn't help so if you're in a noisy environment at work, maybe some ear defenders would come in handy.

I drink about a litre of water (combi of fruit juice, coke zero, water and milk) a day during work and then more at home. Nothing has really changed there I dont think. Blood Pressure is a good question, certainly work is stressing me out at present so needs checking.

When I was diagnosed they put it down to several things (IE they didn't have a clue) Loud music/noise is most likely the main reason, along with loud working environment and using solvents on a daily basis.

I am pretty good with loud music, still have it loudish but I am careful with it. It could be nothing I suppose other than just getting a little older, but at this rate I will be deaf by 50 years old

Like most I leaned to cope with it quickly and tbh it never bothered me until it got worse recently. Then its like going through that initial period of hearing it constantly and not being able to sleep due to it.

See what the doc says I guess

The not sleeping thing is a bitch :/ when I was little I used to think it was the sound of silence hahahaha bless.. now I know what it is but electrical items also set it off, like if my laptop is on charge it make a similar noise then after unplugging it. oh there it is that damn ringing :/
I know a couple of people whom have gone litterally mad with it though... no joke they were both older than 50 and 1 had a few problems to begin with

what does your doc say Mat? I've never been to him about it as there is no cure and he already thinks I'm a hypocondriac

Not been able to see him yet (they are useless), when it first came on I went to the doc who then refereed me to the ear specialist. I was tested got told I had tinnitus, we discussed how it may or may not of happened. They then said there is nothing that can be done just learn to live with it. That was it

However I have heard a few people having medication and some sort of treatments to try and improve it or get rid of it recently. Which surprised me due to the lack of help and support I got at the time. Maybe things have moved on and got a little better these days.

I have got private health care but as I have had tinnitus for so long they will charge me a cost for having it looked at. It may be worth it though.
