52 plate 1.6 sxi using oil

Hi, My astra is using up oil.

It has used around 3 liters over 5,000 miles.

does anyone have any suggestions to what is wrong with it?

the car seems to be running fine.

Ive spoke to someone with the same engine and he has the same problem and his is using around the same amount with the same millage.

hiii welcome to the club of "ridiculous oil useage from your z16xe" =D
consider yourself lucky I get through about a litre every 500 miles hahaha
but if you read the owners manual you will notcie this type of engine does use a lot of oil and IIRC vauxhall say it will use around a litre every 1000 miles, I think thats on excessive engine wear, or something, can't quite remember ... I'm tired

I have no clue what makes some of these engines use loads of oil and others use none. I've got a Z16XE on 151k and it only drops a few dipstick markers between 20k services so barely any need to top it up, yet others seem really prone to using loads of oil. It does seem common for high oil usage, though the 1litre/1000miles is a maximum figure and it should not be using that really.

At a guess, the engines which have done lots of town and low speed/short trip running will be more worn and prone to oil loss than engines like mine which do 99% long journeys with nice warm oil.

Beyond engine rebuilds, I doubt there's much to be done.

the vauxhall range of ecotec engines are known to be oil users and as willeywilson states they can use upto 1 ltr per 1000 miles without any other issues and run perfectly well. on some engines it has been put down to highly glazed piston bores during manufacture which has caused high oil consumption. some oils tend to be less stable than others and burn off quicker, i always use Silkolene oils and have never needed to top up between services as this oil is known to be shear stable

    Really!?

Is that just over the counter???

and, yes, mine uses tons of oil!
I'm probably using a litre every 5-600 miles and a bottle of Wynns Stop Smoke every couple of months too - or otherwise its like a James Bond car away from the lights!

mine uses a load of oil as did the old engine. When I blew number one up and stripped it down the valve stem oil seals were dry and worn. According to the mechanic who has done a few of the 1.6 16v engines, worn valve stem oil seals seem to be the most common problem for the oil useage and have almost no effect on how the car runs until they completley die. The wear happens when cold on short trips so if the car does regular short journeys then they will obviously have more wear on the valve stem oil seals so burn more oil. Aside from an expensive rebuild theres nothing you can do. Additives will help a bit but never make any real difference. the only other option is to go up to a 50 grade oil but that in itself can cause other issues
It would definitely go better with an engine in it
