Cambelt tensioner, design changed by Vauxhall - why?

I understand that the older cambelt tensioner was replaced with a newer tensioner around the year 2001...is that right?

But to fit the newer tensioner to the car you need a bracket of some sort.
OR you can just replace like-for-like and get an old cambelt kit.

Why did Vauxhall bring in this re-designed tensioner system?
What was wrong with the older system?

I specifically ask because I have the older setup on my car, but I was offered the newer kit with a bracket for around £85 more than replacing like-for-like.
I ordered the older kit for a simple like-for-like replacement as I wanted to save money.
Did I do the right thing?

Does anyone know why the tensioner was modified by Vauxhall?

This thread didn't get many replies when first released, but with all the talk of cambelt changing on here of late I thought it might be a good time to ressurect the beast...

Old timing belt kit vs. New kit.... your experiences?
Any why did VX make the design change?
