    240v Power supply?

    hi guys
im waiting on a double din dvd player for my astra
    (i think its a Mk5. its a 2006 GTC)
i was just curious about connecting an xbox 360 to it and how would i power get the 240v to power the console.

    some kind of transformer maybe?

also i have read other places that you need to run a wire from the ignition to power an aftermarket head unit (i have the iso converter)
can anyone shed some light on this for me

    thanks

You have two options for the xbox, either fit a 12v to 240v inverter in the car or get a power supply kit for the xbox to modify it to run off 12v.
The modification will be a better option, power wise, however it will mean you can't take the xbox out to use it in the house, also you will not have a warranty on the xbox itself.

Yes, the Mk5 needs an ignition feed added if you fit an aftermarket headunit.

If you have the ciggy lighter/power socket fitted you can get a switched live there, just connect to the black wire.

i have done some research about trying to fit the xbox 360
its easy to get the voltage needed for the plug but it uses a lot of watts that i cant get from the 12v socket

some people think that you can connect a transformer directly to the battery. would that be difficult to feed the wires from the engine bay into the car?

i really have no idea about this kind of stuff so astra wiring for dummies style explaination would be great

You could hard wire a power invertor into your car?

is that not the same as connecting it directly to the battery?

If you connected it direct to the battery the battery could go flat as it will be wired up permamently

Yes with one of these I would go via the battery to save on interference but i'd feed it via a ignition swithed relay

You can't conect the transformer to the battery. Your battery provides 12v DC power, the Xbox transformer requires 240v AC power, hence using an invertor.
Due to the power required, the invertor needs a decent sized cable run from the battery, bit like fitting an amplifier.
There are kits available for various games consoles to adapt them for connection direct to 12v DC. These are recommended as they are much more efficient than having to convert power up to 240v, only to drop it back down again to the required voltages using the xbox's power transformer.
