Newbie-Key/immobiliser code and ecu code problem- please help

    Hi,

I recently brought a 2001 1.8 sri astra. Took for test drive, drove fine, but orange light with car and spanner came up as heading back to dealer after a 4 mile test drive. He said he would fix that.

Went back to pick up car and light now off, drove home and everything fine. (25 mile run.

Tried to start up car with one key the following morning, wouldnt start, but other key did (the key i had driven home). Wanted both keys working so phoned dealer and he said they can be chipped/reprogrammed to work.
Took keys and car to vauxhall dealer/servicing and they tried, but said the original code you get in your car pass didnt match up, so without a code they couldnt pair it up. A 10 min job turned out to be a 1 hour job for them. They even phoned their technical department and their advice was that the car had a new ECU put in possibly key barrel too? Without knowing the code of that ECU they cant get the other key working so that the immobiliser knows the key.

So basically took back the car to the dealer and told him to sort it so both keys are working and i have the code, incase another key is needed in future incase one is lost or broken.
At present he is sorting it.

Having only brought the car2 days ago, my previous being a ford escort, Im reading up what an ECU is and does, the keys and chips and how they work with immobilsers, the fault codes the ECU gives out etc. so reading up a lot. But would just like some reassuring advice about this situation.
I understand putting in new/recycled ECUs are fine and common, but do i need the "code" of the ECU for future use or diagnostics purposes?
What "code" do i need from this ECU and can it be done?
What else should i get the dealer provide about this ECU/only one key starts the car situation?

The key that doesnt start the car, remotely and manually opens all doors, goes into ignition and turns on all lights, but doesnt turn over the engine.

Hope this is enough info and apologise if posted in wrong thread/forum area as new to this all.

    Thanks for your time,
    Tuey

VX HQ should know the immobilize code via ECU serial number as the immobilizer code is incorporated in the program

When I took it to a vauxhall garage though, would they not know to do this? They said they couldnt get the ecu/immobiliser code from the ECU to program the spare key that didnt work.

Sorry if Im sounding thick as all this is new to me. But thanks for the reply.

    Thanks in advance.

Well you would hope they would lol! The garage wont have anything to read the code from the ECU the Tech2 doesn't go that far. Best of ringing customer service speaking to a Tech, then finding out if they will be willing to release the code to an approved VX dealer, Yes if they are willing as after all they could tell you you need a new ECU as the don't know the code for that one which in turn makes them a tidy profit

    Thanks for reply.

The guy i spoke to at the garage did say "unofficially" that I would be able to get a mobile key cutter with right "kit" to find the code off the key/ecu to then programme the spare keys chip.

Is this true and would you be able to point us in the right direction? Im based in Nrth Herts.

Lol is this the garage that you got the car from? The transponder key is a rolling code signal copping the code lol, that code from the key is a transmitting code not the code for the ECU to tell it you have two key's paired to the car,If it is the garage you bought the car from? tell them get it done and you might buy the car as it just sounds like stall tactics. Best bet Ring VX HQ customer service, you may have to jump through a lot of hoops to prove you are legal owner of that car/ECU in order to get it done, explain and then see what they say the ball is in their court. Sorry i couldn't be of more help

Ok, as it stands, the dealer I brought the car from says he has got the second key working and retreived the immobiliser code form the ecu, so problem solved. He says a mobile key cutter/ecu reader may be able to do it. He did it n 30 mins.

Wont be able to pick up car now til Sat tho! so when i do pick it up ill find out who this mobile guy is and post, and whether i had to pay anything for it too!!

    Fingers crossed!
