    Bigger disks

I Recently changed all my brakes to drilled grooved vented disks, ferodo pads, and ferodo drums and shoes for the rear

    Its on an astra mk4 1.6 16v 2001

But im still a bit dissappointed. They overheat real quick and the fade is terrible

Does anyone know what size the disks i have would be (Standard 1.6 size) and how i would go about getting a bigger set on the front. Take it i would have to remount the calipers.

Also has anyone changed back drums to disks and how hard / pricey has it been?

    Cheers.

    This is my current set-up:

You can go to a 308mm setup, I'm assuming yours is currently a 256mm disc. I think you need new discs, calipers, and caliper carriers, usually needing the discs re-drilled to 4-stud and I think some spigot rings for the discs too to ensure they sit central. A few guides on here if you search around.

Don't forget it'll take new discs and pads a few hundred miles to bed in though...

youll need a 4 stud 280mm or 4 stud 308mm setup as your current 256mm setup is absolutely dire - terribly underpowered for the mk4 - end of

easy to do - quite cheap really

ive got calipers and carriers for 308mm turbo spec if u need them but youd need 5 stud 308 discs redrilled to 4 stud

with the 280mm setup u can use factory 4 stud discs as used on the mk5 etc

just do a search as theres countless amounts of threads on this subject

    £150 should get u a 4 stud 280mm setup

    £200-250 for the 308mm setup

Is there much between the 280mm and 308mm setup? I didn't realise there was a decent price jump between the two.

280s are a doddle to get hold of as they are on any non turbo 5 stud astra so piece of piss to source

308s are more rare especially at breakers etc unless u get in there quick

theres a set for sale on forum as we speak though for £120 - youd then just need them redrilled

a local engineer over here does that for a tenner a disc so not bad at all

my initial price is based mainly on if u needed to source brand new 308 carriers and just source the rest of the stuff from a 208 model - discs are fairly easy to get hold of - whether used or new

Cheers. They're on my list when my current discs/pads are shot - hoped they'd get an advisory on the recent MOT but no joy

the whole brake system was bled and ive done about 1500miles on them, just i can overheat them within 2-3minutes on a country road if really going at it, and im quite big for engine braking so they dont take a huge strain

I would say you have cooked the pads.

Try some yellow stuff pads and I bet it will be a lot better
