Would be grateful if someone can help me please.
I run a 2000 plate X Astra G - 1.6 - 8V CLUB as my to and from work car. Its quite tidy, and I've made a few subtle mods to the interior and exterior. I have it serviced regularly; the last one was 12'000 miles ago, and it was a full service. Its done 77'000 miles, and runs as sweet as a nut.
My main problem(s) are;
a) it is a slug! - the excelleration is a bit poor. I used to have a Mk3 1.6 - 16V and the excelleration was positively meteoric when compared with the 8V Mk4 I have.
b) the fuel consumption is dire; I'm averaging 28 - 30 MPG. It's mainly used for backwards and forwards to work, which is mostly motorway.
I don't boot it, and keep to around 70 - 75 mph when on the motorway. I have noted that the rev's seem to be quite high; at 80 mph, the engine is turning roughly 4200 RPM. Its fitted with the X16SZR engine.
I have changed the bog standard 14 inch steel wheels to some nice 17 inch wheels, however the local tyre company checked the size and profile, and fitted me up with some 205 / 45 / 17 tyres, and said that this set up was as near to the 14 inch set up I started with.
Does anyone have any ideas? is this engine renowned for poor fuel consumption and lack of oomph?
My wife runs a 53 plate Meriva, which on the face of it seems to have the same engine (although I was told by the local Vauxhall dealer that her engine although an 8V, will be totally different to mine), and she seems to have the same problem, no oomph, and it glugs juice...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I appreciate it depends on the general condition of the engine its self, but its well looked after, and is regularly checked for oil water etc. The head is ok, no leaks, and the oil and water show no signs of contamination. I'm a loss really. Would fitting an aftermarket K & N filter help?
