Compression Test Result - Any ideas??

    Hi

Just compression tested my Astra 1.6 8v zsr Auto 1999. Working from left to right as you look at the engine - 1st & 2nd cylinders went straight up into the green segment on tester. Went up to around '14' on the dial. Cylinder no.3 went in to the green but was a little slower in getting there and got to around 13.5. Cylinder no.4 was the slowest to get to the green segment at around 12 > 12.5 on the dial.

Whilst the tester was on no.3, there was a 'pop' sound. We both heard it, and it came from the engine and not the tester. The 'pop' sound was like air pressure releasing would sound, not over loud but definately audible!!

    Any ideas??

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the tester sealed correctly and didn't crossthread. Those were my first thoughts so we double checked the reading!!

    Hi

Rough running, poor economy, no oomph when accelerating away from junctions. Oh, and now using a little oil with a bit of black/sooty smoke from exhaust!!!!

Have a spare engine, apart from the block which is well stuffed, so have swapped various bits to no avail - problems still exists. Thinking of doing the spare head up and swapping, including a new cam belt(not sure when it was changed in the current engine).

    Astra 1.6 szr auto 1999

    Hi
Just a bit of an update.
Poor fuel economy, uneven idle(including revs holding high for 4/5 secs and then dropping to normal), thinking its going to stall, not pulling as it should, exhaust sounding throaty(but its new), sometimes it sounds as though the exhaust is blowing but not sure if its a 'sucking' sound rather than something 'blowing'. Its also smelling badly of petrol in the exhaust fumes!! Its lost very little coolant, but used oil!! Sometimes looks a little 'steamy' from exhaust, but is also 'sooty'!!

Throttle body been cleaned + new gasket(also tried the spare throttle body i have), new exhaust manifold gasket(also tried the spare manifold i have), tried the spare m.a.p. i have, new lamda sensor, cleaned breathers + inside rocker cover.

I understand there's a few symptoms but it may indicate to someone what the fault maybe!!

Have a spare cylinder head - is all cleaned up with new gaskets, thermostat and valve stem oil seals. Is it worth swapping????

    Thanks
