    1999 Mk4 Astra Dti - Poor MPG?

    Hi Everyone,

I have recently got hold of a 1999 Mk4 Astra Dti and I'm not sure I'm getting the correct mileage.

From what I've read online these cars are supposed to get 55+ mpg. However, I only seem to be getting around 43-45 mpg.

I'm pretty sure it won't be my driving style that is affecting it. I do an 80 mile round trip to work every day and it involves mostly motorway travel. I don't drive like a loon and most of the time my speed is about 65mph - 70mph. Revs are at about 2600 - 2800.

Are there any particular problems with this model of car that could be causing this or is the MPG I'm getting accurate?

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

Edit: Forgot to mention that it's a 1.7 Dti

Haven't done a full tank test yet, usually refuel when I have a quarter tank left (due to driving on motorway stretches where there are no service stations).

But what I can tell you is that after half a tank (25 litres) I had done about 240 miles.(43.6 mpg)

Last time I fueled up was at a quarter tank and I'd done about 360 miles (43.6 mpg)

Have a look in you user manual at the back, divide the number by 282 to get your mpg.... i've been thinking i had the 101bhp 1.6 but i've got the 98 which is much worse on fuel and the urban cycle states only 24-25 in the book.

Something doesn't sound right there. I drive a Astra 1.8 petrol auto, and by the sounds of it I drive in a very similar way to you. My mpg over the last 10,000 miles have averaged 40mpg (and generally get just over 400 miles to a tank). Therefore I suspect you should be getting at least 50mpg.

My thoughts exactly. Hence I thought I'd ask around on here.

Pretty clueless when it comes to cars so I was wondering if there were any common faults that could be causing it.

I'm running an older Isuzu engine'd Mk3 and get about 40mpg round town, got near enough 60mpg when I did a run to Darlington and back to my hometown. You should be getting more MPG's than that. Have you tried to use any kind of injector cleaner? to see if that helps?
Probably the ONLY Astra Mk3 sitting on Corsa D SXI rims!
