had my battery tested turn out its was alright and putting out sumin like 12volts, but the alternator was only sending 13.6 volts to the battery and the mechanic said i should get it changed... is 13.6 bad? i read that 14 or more is what its should be doing is this true?

as said already - alt should be pushing out around 14.2-14.4v on idle

your 13.6 is NOT 14.2-14.4v therefore yes it is undercharging!

A replacement alt can be had for around £90 or less - check out the many sellers on ebay who specialise in these or even a local motor factors

providing you have aircon then youll need a 100amp unit

as for the £240 price mentioned by "mk4rob" all i will say is wtf!!!!

battery can be had for £35-50 on trade club = just a little more if u pay retail price

so do the maths and youll see its nowhere near the figure he quoted

"should be ok for now" isnt really that good a reason tbh.........get it sorted now whilst u can - sods law dictates it'll turn round and bite u in the ass one cold winters mornin and leave u stranded!

get a one from a scrappies for about a tenner or so - or even ebay if u dont wanna pay new prices!

that was including fitting. and for the 1.6 16v there are 4 differnet alternators al ranging from differnt prices. mine was a recon and it cost £125 and thaat was the cheapest i could get it.

i did gather it was including labour but ur intial post seemed to have frightened the OP off into thinking it was too pricey to look into replacing

its an easy job to replace and a simple 100a unit can be had quite reasonably so u should easily get it sorted

    anyway good luck
