it should be the X16XEL engine and the ICV is bolted to the left hand side (as you look at it) of the throttle body with two small bolts. it is a cylindrical black unit with a multiplug connection

    nope

X will be 2000, 2001 or thereabout therefore its the latter Z16XE

Z series engines do NOT have an ICV so stop looking!

    Rite ok thanks guys

So if i have no idle control valve, what else could be a likely cause for my car having the famous cutting out problem?

I have blanked off the EGR valve which helped a little, then yd i disconnected the Lambda sensor which helped a lot but it still cuts out every now and then.

i stand corrected by GB, however i have a late 'x' plate Astra and mine is X16XEL. I am led to believe that from 'Y' plate on that the 'Z' series engine was used.

changeover was 2000 so X plate could be either engines theoretically

    as for cutting out

    EGR
    crankshaft sensor
    camshaft sensor

are some of the possibilities i can think of off hand

i take it youve removed the throttle body and fully cleaned it in petrol or carb cleaner?
