    Thumbs Up Oil Change time....

My Mark 4 astra 1.8 needs its annual oil change which i will most likely be having done at a kwik fit/browns type place...

My car has high mileage so im just asking what type of oil you guys reccomend for a 1.8 engine?

Not so much worried about the brand but the grade will need to be spot on. How can I ensure the garage put the right grade of oil in because i know its important particularly in higher mileage engines.. Cheers guys.

thanks people...I could do it myself if i had the pit etc or even something to catch all the used oil but by the time ive got on the floor with hands black :if i can get it done for about £30 then thats not too bad is it?

You dont need a pit dude and to catch the oil just use a container that will fit under the car and hold about 5ltrs [to be on the safe side].

Use your £30+ notes for something else.

if you can get it done for £30 may as well let the garage do it. The oil + filter will cost you close to that.

Though it is better to have your own tools + trade club to get the oil cheap. Then you could change it every couple of months.

IIRC i got the filter & oil for somewhere around £15. Guessing a bit now, but i'm sure it was somewhere around there.

Plus it was good to do it for practice as i'd never done it before.

I didn't need a pit. Just drove on planks of wood so that i could get under the front end a bit. I don't know how everyone else here does it, but that was the easiest for me.

Hardest part was getting the old filter off IIRC. Everything else was a doddle.

Retail price from Vauxhall is £25 for oil + £4ish on filter (depends what type you need) + VAT as well. So looking at over £30 just for the items.

It's cheap enough to have it done at a garage.

As for Oils i changed mine, i'm using Castrol's High Milege 15w-40 and it seems to have made the engine run a little smoother. Mine's does 80k. I fancy using some Lucas next though.
