Like a ticking noise? Can be tappets, worn pistons, or a few other things that don't spring to mind at the moment.
N.b. any opinitons expressed above should be ignored and considered 'ramblings', under no circumstances should they be relied upon...

it is caused by oil draining from the hydraulic tappets and on start up, because the tappets are slightly worn they take a while to fill and pump up. As long as it only lasts a short while on cold start up then it is nothing to worry about. sometimes changing the oil to a good, slightly thinner (5w/40) and using Forte oil flush can help to freshen up the top end.

if they go quiet shortly after start up, i would leave them be for now. They all suffer some oil loss as mileage increases, they only need changing if the noise is constant and loud
