how to colour code door handles and bump strips

Wondering if anyone has or knows the best way to colour code the exterior door handles and door bump strips on a 4door mk4 astra... they are the black bumpy plastic stuff kind, wondering about filling, sanding, spraying and lacquer or something? any help or advice would be much appreciated!

First job is to use so aluminium oxide sand paper to and out all of the horrible bumps in the plastic, then use some wet wet and dry paper work though from 240 to 800 grit gradually sanding out all of the scratches in the plastic until it is smooth. You need to sand it back a lot as there are chemicals in the plastic near the surface you need to sand past.

At this point some people will apply filler primer but if youve done a proper prep job you wont need to. I dont use it because its cr*p.

You are now ready to prime, apply several thin coats allowing the primer to dry inbetween coats, do not apply a thick coat or it will flake back off in not a lot of time. Once youve built up several coats sand it flat with some wet 1200 grit wet and dry paper.

You can now paint the items

Lacquer is not always necessary but often rattle can paint wont colour match until laquer is applied. It also take a while to harden so dont try to fit the parts until the next day and dont press fresh paint with your fingers or you will mark it.

Im gonna do this at some point, to get used to painting parts, ready for when i get my bumpers/skirts next year.

In terms of the bumpstrips, is there much point in painting the back of them? Or is it better if you do?

    Cheers

theres no point in doing the backs of them whatsoever, just be sure you dont miss the sides of them as this is very noticeable when on the car, best not to spray them on the ground or the sides are easily missed.

I forgot to mention, after youve paited the parts, give them a couple of days and give them a thorough polish with some cutting paste (Halfords call it rubbing compound, it comes in a yellow tube and is kept near the sandpaper... or get a big pot of it off ebay

This will give a smooth surface and a nice shine especially on darker colours

mines in star silver so shouldnt be too hard to match it all being well... will give it a go with what you say, get a few sprays and different abrasive papers and get a handle from a scrappy for testing

Yeah Ive done that colour out of rattle cans with no problems and it matched okay. Just take your time and remember the prep work is more important than the painting.

If you do make any mistakes or the paint runs make sure the paint is completely dry before you try and sand it back down, if its wet you will pull all the paint off.

    Have fun
