Help Please - Astra H - Aircon Problem

    Hi everyone,

I'll apologise if i've not posted this in the right part of the forum - here goes..

I have an 05 2.0 Turbo SportHatch and the aircon is blowing out whatever the air temperature is outside and is not getting cold.

I took it into Kwik Fit to have it re-gassed and it worked for about a day so I took it back again to get it looked back.

Meanwhile I have noticed that if you have the aircon running it makes a sort of grinding whining noise (and still doesn't work).

Kwik Fit said that there is something wrong with my aircon but don't know what and that I should take it to a main dealer (they refunded my £45 which is ok I suppose).

Has anyone heard of this problem and what it could be, and more importantly how much it might cost to get it fixed?

I'm having my cam belt changed by Vauxhall next month, is it worth leaving it to them to fix while they have the car or could it end up costing me a small fortune?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

    Many thanks

    Pete

It sounds like you may have a small leak in the system somewhere which is causing the coolant to slowly seap out. I had the same issue with my MK5 diesel but luckily I noticed within the warranty period and they managed to get it fixed. The whinning noise your hearing is most probably due to low coolant level in the system and should go away once the leak is fixed and coolant topped up. If you're out of your warranty period, take it to a AC specialist and they'll be able to sort it for you, probably a lot cheaper than VX can.

Your car has got a leak mate and the whirring noise is just your compressor, you should hear a click first then the whirring and you should hear the engine take the load. Ive got my own Air Con and diesel tuning business and i use all manual stuff as the automated machines e.g snap on or Kool Air systems that kwik fit and the likes use dont have the capability to find tiny leaks, you could have a hair line crack in your condensor that takes weeks even months for the gas to escape but once the gas level in the system has dropped below a certain pressure then the air con will stop working, but find an aircon company that will do a pressure test and uv leak test, i charge £35 for this service which includes the regass so it should come with your air con service.

    Many Thanks

Vauxhall has an official recall on condensors for this fault, the air con just grinds lots. Apparently caused by a dodgy screw or something - they should rectify for you FOC. With a bit of luck you'll get a free re gas too!
