    4-stud 1.6 and 1.8's will be 256mm discs

5-stud 1.8's however are 280mm discs. You can do a big brake upgrade using 4-stud 280mm discs which I can highly recommend

Have a search for my details

uprated disks and pads will help but they can only go so far. The poverty sized 256mm disks arent good enough at the end of the day. The meriva 1.8 IIRC uses 280mm disks in 4 stud which would fit to your current hubs to maintian 4 studness and save you having to change wheels. To go with these obviously you would need calipers, pads, steering knuckles and carriers (all off a mk4 with the brake size you will use). Alternatively you can do what I will be doing and go for 308mm disks. The parts list is the same as above but the 308s only come in 5 stud so they need drilled to 4 stud which isnt the hardest of things to do and most devent engineering places will do it precisly for not very many pennies.
It would definitely go better with an engine in it
