ENGINE: X14XE (hopefully fairly simple compared to turbo's and 2.2's...!)
PLEASE PLEASE help to diagnose my engine problems. I have had some trouble ever since I bought it really and as a student do not have the money to simply send it in to be diagnosed for £60, and then have the work done on top. If anyone could point out any thing they think it could be that would be fantastic. I have tried searching some of my problems on the forum and google but I am led to threads with 20 people all shouting different answers and the original poster never reporting back what the problem was. I would really like to get this problem solved as everytime I drive her I feel I am stuck with a defective Astra and just want her to run smoothly.
I have no fault codes and no EML appearing (apart from ABS at the moment) but my engine is far from healthy. It sounds horrid, and is getting worse! I fear if i dont investigate fully now I could be looking at bigger repair bill than if I sort it now. I will be posting up videos of the various problems tomorrow to help the process.
Problems when idling..
First problem is over fuelling when starting the engine. You can smell it straight away and my wallet can feel it too. I went to a meet in hunstanton a few weeks ago, that trip (50-60 miles each way) cost me as much as a few 7 mile trips I do every day. I realise that short trips cost more anyway, but im talking A LOT more. I think the over fuelling when I switch the engine on is the cause. Can this be stopped?
Loud tapping noise, speeds up when rev'd (Could this be Tappets? If so, is this a big job?)
Smoke from exhaust (Not black smoke, not too coloured at all, but is constant, especially when cold.)
Idle is slightly uneven, doesnt sound healthy (A sensor maybe? Lambda has been checked and is fine.)
When it has been sitting for 2 minutes (maximum) the engine begins to heat up very quickly and the fan has to kick in to cool it down, which it does succesfully, but, this happens when sat at any junction for more than 40 seconds so is getting tiresome.
When I bought the car I took it for a spin and when I rev'd it at 3.5k revs it made a loud grating noise. It didnt do it all the time, only for the short period it was on those revs. I didnt think anything of it. This noise hasnt dissapeared. I think it is linked in with the other problems. The noise is now no louder but is lasting for a further few hundred revs meaning if I drop a gear I am greeted with the horrid sound of my engine having some sort of trouble. This isnt fun and as it has got worse I want it solved before she blows up!
The car developed a noise when accelerating, a kind of 'grating' noise that was the same in every gear. Since i bought it I have changed the Catalytic converter, the mid section and the backbox. I put this down to exhaust and after atleast 8 trips to ATS (which is probably where my problems lies) they changed the mid section for a new one under warranty. (althought im not convinced they swapped it..) The noise DID go away for about 2 months, but has now returned to be EXACTLY as before but only happens every few accelerations. I would obviously consider it to be the mid section as the noise went away when it was changed but it is now back exactly as before, as the engine has so many problems perhaps it could be soemthing else? Should I go back a NINTH time and get them to change it again? It is under waranty for two years.
I appreciate ANY and EVERY ones feedback but would prefer not to have a thread filled with people saying random parts of the engine that could be at fault as im sure everything under the bonnet could be named nearly. Has anyone experienced these problems before and what did they turn out to be? Please dont think im being ungreatful and I hope you can see where I am coming from.
