    electrical problem?

when i turn my head lights on, the lights work as usaul, but the back light behind the speedo and heater controls sometimes dont.

when the lights behind the clocks doesnt come on they still work fine i.e speedo, rev count, just no lights.

any body else had this?? i beleive the switch has been replaced. so its either a wiring fault to the switch or one out of it. are there any relays ect in the wiring???

dimmer doesnt make a difference. i believe the previous owner has replaced the whole switch with a new one. so i kinda eliminated that.

Its the bracket behind the clocks!

Had this problem myself, you have to remove the clocks, and unclip the plastic connection in the dash behind the clocks, then with a small screwdriver, gently bend each pin towards the centre slightly.

I done this after driving along and first the lights went out,so I tapped the dials and the light came back on,then off, tapped again and the needles dropped lol.

Everything works fine now after doing the above, only taks about 10mns to do!

but its not just the dials, its the heater lights aswell. as far as i know the wire's dont run to the clocks them off to the heater lights, they have seperate feeds which would indicate a wiring fault.

the dails work fine, when the lights not on behind it, the speedo, etc still work inc the warning lights, its just the whole back lighting in the car.

pass... dont know where it came from

ill try a new switch. the car has xenon lights (standard ones) so no manual level on the switch. my mum has a 1.6 astra (without front fogs) so i might try that to see if it makes any difference.

ok, to sum something up, all the lights that are controlled by the dimmer dont work when the fault occours, somebody has just told me it could be a fault with the multi-timer in the fuse box, which controls the voltage to the panel lamps depending on the dimmer setting.

edit, just tried a working switch, made no difference
