Question Have you fixed another persons PC/laptop before?

Put this on another forum & had some interesting replies lol.

It comes from a report in The Mirror i read a while ago. They sent in a bugged laptop to be fixed at various stores (likely London at a guess) to see if the problem (think a loose memory chip) would be diagnosed properly.

Damn near all of them were caught snooping through the hard drive. Some would download pics/vids etc to a memory stick. One even tried to gain access to bank accounts with details that were on the machine, but only failed due to the details bing duff.

Tiz for this very reason if i was to sell my PC, the hard drive would not be going with it!!

So have you snooped around on the machine you've been fixing? Found anything interesting, or just a load of nothing?

I used to fix PC's for friends, workmates, neighbours, etc. all the time... and I never once was tempted to go snooping. As far as I'm concerned, it would be like rifling through someone's personal property... I just wouldn't do it, end of.

Sorry if that sounds a bit sanctemonious, just the way I was brought up

Encouraging that there's some honest people about. Shame these 'scare stories' can put you off taking your stuff to get fixed

That is how Gary Glitter was caught after taking his computer to PC World to be repaired. You can completely wipe your hard drive and renistall Windows before selling the computer. I never allow user names or passwords to be saved as some sites try to "lift" them. Always store interesting stuff on a CD/DVD or external hard drive. Unfortunately you can't trust many people now.

i heard that "nothing is ever really deleted" before. How many times would a portion of the hard drive have to be overwritten for you to be unable to get old data back though?

I'm always given computers and laptops to fix. If they just want a format and reinstall then i usually see no reason to boot windows, however when they want crap backed up then it doesn't count as snooping when i'm trying to find the family photo's etc

However when backing up photos i can't be blamed if some idiot has left... hmmm... home made videos under C:\XXX
