    Battery/Alternator problem...

I am having a couple of problems and am a little stuck what to do next.

When I turn my HIDs on occassionally only one of them lights up, it can be either. It usually happens if I have popped to the shops and get back in the car.

I can start the car and it idles fine. I turn on the side lights and it goes all lumpy and virtually stalling. So I have to turn the lights off until the car has been running for a while.

Now this does not happen all the time, usually after short trips and restarting the engine. So I went ot my local garage and they tested the battery and alternator and suggested it was the alternator. They pointed me in the direction of an auto-leccy who could help. He had a look at it and said that the alternator is charging fine.

So now I am unsure what to do. Is it an earthing type problem. I haven't done the earthing mod. Could this be the cause?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Neil.

Do you have access to a multimeter?
If so, can you do a couple of checks. What is the voltage accross the battery terminals with the engine off & what is it with the engine on & running?

    Yeah. I did that...

With the engine off it is running about 16V. With the engine on it was running 18V. This was once I reached work and the car had been off for about an hour.

This seemed strange, so I disconnected the terminals and measured the battery again, this time I got about 13V.

But the voltage is measuring high without the lights on? I thought this would indicate the alternator over charging or a duff battery?

I'll have a poke around with my hammer.

18v how is your car still alive? not being funny but make sure it is on DC and on the right voltage setting, if it is still this high your alternator is up the duff and could of done a lot of damage could i've seen some get away with just blown bulbs

    Nah meter was used correctly.

Thinking it might be somekind of pickup. Once the leads were removed from the terminals it was ok. Also used 2 different flukes just to make sure.
