booked a service - quick bit of oil advice needed...

right, have booked the derv in for a service at vaux dealer (only way i gather without voiding warrantee or making a bodge myself)! and when i spoke on the phone i asked about oil type... they seemed adament that 10w 40 was the right oil they'd be putting in, though i was always under the impression it should be 5w 30. they said this could be done for £10 more.

    opinions please? iv got a 2007 1.7 CDTi 100, 31k on clock.

    thanks

Do you still have the handbook for the car? I think it should say what type of oil in there.

I think that the standard diesel oil down here is 10w 40, and yeah it always costs more than oil for petrol motors. I haven't noticed 5w 30 oil for diesels, but then I guess I haven't looked around for it...

Nothing better to do so checked Vauxhall website and looked through the owner's manual for the newer Astras. Doesn't appear to specify what oil to use - says to refer to the "service manual", which I could not find on their website.

The website also has a page outlining oils for all the different Vauxhalls, and while all other diesels are listed as using 10w40, it doesn't specify diesel vs petrol for Astras. Just says 5w30 for all models 2006 onwards.

I still wonder whether they simply failed to list 2006+ diesel Astras as requiring 10w40. Maybe you can find somebody with the "service manual", or have the Vauxhall people show you where it specifies 10w40.
