I'm a newbie
I bought a 2nd hand Astra Estate, 2.0 DI LS. Although this model doesn't have a turbo, mine appears to. Previous owner said there was a problem where the turbo cuts out after a couple of minutes driving but as I got it so cheap, took it straight to my mechanic who told me the turbo was full of "crap", wasn't spinning properly and replaced it. I'd bought it without tax or MOT so he couldn't really road test it that much.
I drove it home and the engine management light came on and suddenly there was no engine power. Limped home. Took it out the next day, same happened. I used to own a Corsa which had electric faults - with that I found if I turned the engine off, counted to 10 then restarted they would reset. Tried it with this. It worked.
It happened again this time I just switched off and switched straight back on - engine fine.
It happened again and I hadn't realised and stalled the engine. Restarted, works fine.
OK - everyone will be saying "it's an Astra Diesel, your problem is with the EGR". In that case why would turning it off and turning it straight back on again seem to reset it? I'm wondering if the fault might be in the engine management system? Any ideas?
Also it has other faults:
Open the driver's side door there's a warning beep as though the lights are on or the indicators or something. Is this related?
Previous owner appears to have bodged an install of a stereo and some kind of amp in the back. Cables everywhere. Second aerial on the roof. It's a bit of a mess. Could this be related?
There are more problems. It was very cheap to buy but it has cost quite a bit since
