    Aircon condenser question.

Recently the aircon in my Astravan stopped working and I had it regassed by Kwik Fit. It lasted about 5 weeks and stopped working as well as it did so I spoke to an aircon specialist who told me I probably had a leak and to bring it in and he would pressure test it to find out where the leak was. I had look at the aircon components and could see something on the condenser behind the fan. I removed the fan and it looks like this!

Just wondered if this is normal or does it indicate that the leak is from the condenser. I don't see the point in paying for a pressure test just to find that it is the condenser!

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Matt.

So you have a fan thats constantly blowing whatever cr@p it picks up at that one point of the condensor and everyone thinks thats where the fault is! I'd expect mine to look like that is I took the fan off

Yes the condensor is usually the bit that leaks but there's also loads of o rings that an leak slowley over time

yeah to help minimize the chance of leaks run your aricon for 15-30 mins every week or 2, this keeps the gaskets and seals oiled and prevents leaks. if you only run it every summer then you'll find it wont work very well, if atall.
a good way to tell where a leak is, is to check for oil marks like you see there on your condensor, but on vehicles there tends to be alot of oil about anyway dont there lol so harder to tell :-)

Seems like this is becoming a common problem with Astra's! I had to have my condenser replaced last week for my cdti due to damage and corrosion! I was told by the garage that it was common in astra's as there is no guard to protect the condenser and therefore is prone to stone chips etc! Total Bill for mine was nearly £400! This is not funny! Could this be a design fault?!!!

While I understand what you're saying, where is it going to pick up that much oil from? Most of the crap that gets sucked in is airborne dust and insects, if I had that much oil getting sucked in through the fan, surely I would find it on the outside of the fan and the bumper also.
