Z18XE vs VTR top end. Some insight....?

I'm banking on the answer being one of the following:
    1. The VTR is quicker
    2. you were driving wrong lol.

top end as in 50-80 instead of your 0-60.

On the way home, i was behind a Saxo. We got on a straight & being held up by some guy doing about 45 in a 60. No other car so we both went to overtake.

I've just bought in some clocks & at times i'm not convinced the mph reading is accurate, but i'm not 100% sure, so we'll assume it's true.

As we're overtaking, we're at about 50mph-55mph ish & the gap between us is pretty even & then blatt!!!!!! He's gone. Mine's getting to 80 (speeding, i know, but not wreckless as there was sod all else about at this point & we weren't weaving all over the shop!). He was a good bit off by this point.

Now, i wasn't majorly trying, although i was having a bit of a go. All this time i was in 5th. I can't speak for what he was in. I'm only guessing at 4th, or perhaps dropped to 4th when he suddenly bolted.

Mine's only got the Vec C/panel filter mods with cybox exhaust.
The only thing i noticed on his was that his exhaust wasn't standard. I wondered if it'd been lowered, but wasn't 100% sure.

What should've been the outcome between these 2 at 50-80 then? As i thought the 1.8 was supposed to be quicker than the VTR, but not the VTS??

Yeah, wrong gear mate. People say astra 1.6/1.8's are alot slower but they arent really, just require better gear selection.

ATEOTD he could have been pretty well tuned for all you know.

I momentarily had a VTR that was tuned, yet form outside only difference was alloys and lowered.

vtr saxos get to about 90 quite well and can do 90 in 3rd gear so its no surprise really you should of dropped the box to 3rd

    True - & that's the thing, i don't know. I only know it's a non-standard exhaust.

I'm only throwing guesses at his gear selection. But that said, the way he pulled away, it had me wondering that even if i'd dropped it, would i have kept pace? I wasn't particularly bothered - hence the reason i didn't drop a notch, but it just made me wonder.

And to 2nd? Wouldn't that not be too clever for the engine or something (is what i've been told anyway) dropping to 2nd from say, 5th @ 50mph. I was always told that going to 4th would be ok, 3rd maybe, but 2nd?

Perhaps i've been told wrong in the past, i dunno....?

I knew before posting the thread to have a better chance of keeping up with the lad, i should've dropped it, but as said, i wasn't going all out.
the reason i made the thread was down to the manner in which he pulled away tbh - it made me wonder if i could've kept pace even in 4th

would dropping it to 3rd from 5th @ 50mph be ok on the car? Seems a bit of a sharp drop to me - but then i know sod all about this stuff

they are a very light car and will pull well right up to over 130 might have had a 16v engine in but the 8v go well wit an 4branch cam and filter
