Knackered AFM - Effect on Turbo

    Hi,

My second VXR turbo sounds like its on its way out in less than a year (the one before that lasted 11 months as well.) Both got very rattly sounding towards the end of their lives.

I've never got to the bottom of it but my car's pretty much constantly running a dodgy AFM as it keeps blowing them within a few 100 miles (TC and EM light) but I can't afford to keep replacing them and they aren't always accepted under warranty as they usually don't put the EM light on permanently.

Could me running various dodgy AFM's long term be having a negative effect on my Turbo? The exhaust smells very sooty so I'd guess the cars running rich?

    Cheers,
    Craig

sounds like u need to sort ya afm probs 1st, y u blowing so many? u running a perforamce oil based filter by any chance.
we all know now that vxr turbos aint the best and high boost kills them quickly as well as hammering it n not allowing warm up,cool down time

There's no eveidence that more AFMs fail with oil based foam filters than those without!!!!!!

The AFM is a poorly made item and I have changed to a VXR item.
Tell me what you've done, not what you're going to!

disagree, theres plenty of evidence to say oil based filters can kill afm if over oiled, i went through 5 in 9 months because of such a thing cause previous owner over oiled
but also build quality isnt best 4 sure

Thing is I'm running the standard air intake, air filter, and also the car is running a factory map so there's nothing obvious there that would cause so many AFM failures.

I've tried cleaning the air intake, checking voltage at the battery with the engine running, etc, but they still keep blowing.

The car exhaust smells sooty so I'd guess the constantly knackered AFM is causing the car to run lean which is slowly killing the Turbo's through a carbon build up.

    Cheers,
    Craig

I use a cone filter thats not oil based, never had to replaced AFM and had the car 13 months

You wouldnt get carbon build up on a lean mix but your temps would skyrocket depending on the severity could contribute to killing your turbo

As mentioned previously word is you can map the MAF out of the works however I'm not so sure what you can do about the engine light. I've been running with the MAF unplugged for sometime now.

I didn't actually mean to put the word lean, what I actually meant to say was I think the car's running rich, hence the sooty smell and potential carbon build up killing the turbo.
